Life, Death and Magic is the first major exhibition of Ancestral Art of Southeast Asia at the National Gallery of Australia, and reveals the power of art made for rituals of life and death from prehistoric to recent times. The Gallery's renowned collection of Southeast Asian textiles and gold objects, and important new acquisitions of animist sculpture will be displayed alongside key loans from institutions in Asia, Europe and America.

Created from fibre, stone, metal, wood and clay, works include monumental ancestral figures and fertility gods, fierce demonic masks, elaborate gold ornaments, and huge sarcophagi, and come from remote communities of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and the indigenous inhabitants of Taiwan and southern China.
